Hon. Folashade (Fola) Olumo, a Nigerian community leader and APC-USA Deputy Women Leader, participated in the U.S. Congressional hearing on the redesignation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern.” In her remarks to Rep. Chris Smith and attendees, she emphasized gratitude, context, and cooperation rather than blame.
Olumo acknowledged Nigeria’s diversity and the real security challenges posed by extremist groups such as Boko Haram, affecting both Christians and Muslims. However, she warned against misinterpreting the redesignation as a condemnation, urging instead that it be treated as a call for stronger U.S.–Nigeria collaboration.

She emphasized the need to empower local peacebuilders, strengthen civil society, and ensure that U.S. policies reflect the experiences of ordinary Nigerians. Olumo concluded by calling for constructive engagement that protects religious freedom and fosters partnership, ending with blessings for both nations.
Her contribution highlighted balanced diplomacy, responsible advocacy, and the importance of cooperation over polarization in addressing Nigeria’s security and religious freedom issues.
